About the Boykin Spaniel

The Boykin Spaniel is South Carolina's official state dog, developed in the early 1900s by hunters who needed a compact, versatile dog small enough to ride in a boat for turkey and waterfowl hunting in the Wateree River Swamp. This all-American breed combines enthusiastic retrieving ability with a manageable size and friendly temperament. Boykins are energetic, eager, and trainable with a rich brown coat and expressive amber eyes. They are equally at home in the field or the family room, making them outstanding dual-purpose companions.
