- The calculator uses the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula — 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75 — then multiplies by an activity factor (1.0–1.8) based on your dog's life stage, activity level, and neutered status. It converts the result into cups using a standard 375 kcal/cup value for premium dry food. Puppies get a 1.5× multiplier, seniors 0.8×, and neutered dogs receive a 20% reduction. The output is a starting point — adjust based on your dog's body condition score and your vet's advice.
- Yes. Spayed and neutered dogs have a lower metabolic rate — roughly 20–30% fewer calories than intact dogs of the same weight and activity level. The calculator applies a 20% reduction when you toggle the neutered option. Without this adjustment, most fixed dogs will gradually gain weight. Monitor your dog's body condition score (ribs should be easily felt but not visible) and adjust portions up or down as needed.
- Puppies under 6 months do best with 3 meals per day to maintain stable blood sugar. Adult dogs (1–7 years) typically thrive on 2 meals — morning and evening.
