About the Barbet

The Barbet (pronounced 'bar-BAY') is an ancient French water dog whose name comes from 'barbe,' the French word for beard โ€” a reference to their distinctive facial hair. They are believed to be the ancestor of many modern breeds including the Poodle, Bichon Frise, and several water spaniels. Barbets have been retrieving waterfowl from French marshes since the 16th century. Their dense, curly, waterproof coat and joyful personality have earned them the nickname 'mud dog' for their love of splashing through every puddle they find. They are friendly, goofy, and devoted companions.
