About the Swedish Vallhund
The Swedish Vallhund is an ancient Viking herding breed that has been a working farm dog in Sweden for over 1,000 years. Sometimes called the 'Viking dog,' Vallhunds are closely related to Welsh Corgis โ though whether Vikings brought their dogs to Wales or Celts brought theirs to Scandinavia is debated. Like Corgis, Vallhunds are low-to-the-ground cattle herders that nipped at heels, but they have a more wolf-like appearance with their gray sable coat and pointed ears. They are energetic, cheerful, and remarkably versatile dogs that retain strong working instincts while being excellent family companions.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Swedish Vallhunds and Welsh Corgis share a striking resemblance โ both are short-legged, long-bodied cattle herders โ and they are believed to be related. The exact connection is debated: some historians believe Vikings brought their dogs to Wales where they influenced Corgi development, while others suggest Celts brought their dogs to Scandinavia. DNA studies show some genetic relationship. Both breeds use the same herding technique of nipping at cattle heels while dodging kicks. Vallhunds have a more wolf-like appearance with gray sable coloring, while Corgis are typically red or tricolor.
- Swedish Vallhunds can be born with tails of varying lengths โ from full-length curled tails to naturally bobbed tails to no tail at all. This natural variation in tail length is genetically determined, with some puppies in the same litter having different tail lengths. The breed standard accepts all natural tail lengths. Unlike some breeds where tails are docked, Vallhund tail length is entirely natural. This range of tail types is unique among dog breeds and adds to each Vallhund's individual character. No surgical modification should be performed.
- Swedish Vallhunds are excellent family dogs. They are friendly, playful, and exceptionally good with children. Their sturdy build and moderate size make them robust enough for active play without being too large for small children. They are sociable with other dogs and generally adaptable to various living situations. Their main challenges are their tendency to bark (they are vocal watchdogs), potential for herding/nipping children's heels, and their need for daily exercise. For active families who can manage barking and provide adequate exercise, Vallhunds are loyal, entertaining, and deeply devoted companions.
