About the Pug
The Pug is an ancient Chinese breed that has been a beloved companion for over 2,000 years, once cherished by Chinese emperors and later becoming the official dog of the Dutch House of Orange. Known for their motto 'multum in parvo' (a lot in a little), Pugs pack enormous personality into their compact, square bodies. With their flat faces, wrinkled brows, and large, expressive eyes, Pugs seem to display an almost human range of emotions. They are clownish, charming, and intensely people-oriented dogs that live to love and be loved.

- Yes, Pugs are a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed and commonly experience breathing difficulties due to their shortened airways. Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) can cause snoring, snorting, exercise intolerance, and in severe cases, dangerous respiratory distress. Many Pugs cannot exercise vigorously or tolerate heat because they cannot cool themselves efficiently through panting. Some Pugs benefit from corrective surgery to widen their nostrils or shorten their soft palate. When choosing a Pug, look for breeders who select for more moderate facial structure and health-test their breeding dogs for respiratory function.
- Pugs are excellent family dogs. Their sturdy build (despite their small size), patient temperament, and love of human attention make them wonderful companions for families with children. They are rarely aggressive and are tolerant of handling by young children. Pugs get along well with other dogs and cats, making them ideal for multi-pet households. Their low exercise requirements make them manageable for families with busy schedules. The main considerations are their health needs (breathing, weight management) and the fact that they shed more than you might expect from a short-coated small dog.
- Despite their short coat, Pugs are surprisingly heavy shedders. They have a dense double coat that releases a constant stream of hair year-round, with heavier shedding during seasonal changes. Many new Pug owners are shocked by the amount of hair such a small dog produces. Regular brushing two to three times per week with a rubber curry brush or deshedding tool helps manage loose hair. During heavy shedding periods, daily brushing is recommended. Fawn Pugs typically shed more than black Pugs because they have a thicker double coat, while black Pugs often have a single coat.
