About the Neapolitan Mastiff
The Neapolitan Mastiff is an ancient Italian guardian breed with a lineage tracing back to the war dogs of the Roman Empire. Instantly recognizable by their massively wrinkled face, enormous pendulous lips, and imposing, powerful build, Neos are awe-inspiring dogs that were bred to guard estates and families in southern Italy. Despite their fearsome appearance โ one was cast as Hagrid's dog Fang in the Harry Potter films โ well-bred Neapolitan Mastiffs are gentle, steady, and deeply loyal. They are watchful guardians that rely on their intimidating presence rather than aggression.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Neapolitan Mastiffs are among the heaviest droolers of all breeds โ possibly the worst. Their enormous, pendulous lips and loose facial skin produce constant, heavy drooling that intensifies around food, water, excitement, and heat. Drool ropes and strings are an ever-present reality. Walls, furniture, clothing, and visitors will all be affected. Most Neo owners keep towels in every room, in the car, and on their person at all times. If drool is a concern of any kind, this breed is absolutely not for you. For those who can tolerate it, the Neo's loyal, gentle nature compensates.
- Neapolitan Mastiffs are among the lowest-energy dog breeds. They are content with 20 to 40 minutes of moderate daily exercise โ a couple of short walks โ and spend most of their time sleeping or lounging. They are not interested in vigorous exercise, long hikes, or active play. This very low energy level makes them surprisingly manageable for their enormous size. However, they should not be forced to exercise vigorously, especially in heat, as they are prone to overheating and joint stress. Their calm, sedentary nature is a feature of the breed, not laziness.
- Neapolitan Mastiffs are generally not good with other dogs, particularly dogs of the same sex. They are territorial, dominant, and can be dog-aggressive. Their enormous size and power make any conflict potentially dangerous. Same-sex aggression is especially common. Some Neos can live peacefully with a dog of the opposite sex if raised together, but careful management is always necessary. Dog parks and off-leash interactions with unfamiliar dogs should be avoided entirely. Early socialization can improve their tolerance but rarely eliminates the breed's dominant tendencies toward other dogs.
