About the Leonberger
The Leonberger is a majestic giant breed created in the German city of Leonberg in the mid-1800s by crossing Saint Bernards, Newfoundlands, and Great Pyrenees. The goal was to create a dog that resembled the lion on the city's crest. Leonbergers are elegant, powerful, and surprisingly graceful for their size. Males can reach 170 pounds with a magnificent lion-like mane. Despite their imposing appearance, they are gentle, playful, and deeply devoted family dogs. Leonbergers are one of the few giant breeds with a genuinely playful, puppy-like disposition.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Leonbergers are exceptional with children and are often considered one of the best giant breeds for families. They are patient, gentle, and seem to instinctively understand the need for care around small children. Their playful nature makes them enthusiastic companions for kids, and their sturdy build means they can handle rough play without getting hurt. Many Leonberger owners describe them as natural babysitters. However, their large size means toddlers could be accidentally knocked over, so supervision is recommended with very young children.
- Leonbergers are extremely heavy shedders. Their long, thick double coat sheds year-round and goes through two massive seasonal blowouts in spring and fall, during which enormous quantities of fur come loose. Daily brushing is recommended during shedding season and at least two to three times per week otherwise. A good undercoat rake, slicker brush, and powerful vacuum cleaner are essential Leonberger owner tools. People who value a fur-free home or have limited time for grooming should consider a different breed.
- Yes, most Leonbergers love water. This is no surprise given that both the Newfoundland and Saint Bernard โ two of their founding breeds โ are water-loving dogs. Leonbergers have webbed feet that make them strong swimmers, and many will eagerly plunge into lakes, rivers, pools, and even mud puddles. They excel at water rescue and dock diving. Their water-resistant double coat helps protect them in cold water. Many Leonberger owners find it harder to keep their dogs out of water than to get them in.
