About the Keeshond
The Keeshond (pronounced 'KAYZ-hond') is a plush, fox-like spitz breed that served as the symbol of the Dutch Patriot political party during the 18th-century Netherlands political uprising. Named after the party's leader, Kees de Gyselaer, the breed has been the national dog of the Netherlands for centuries. Keeshonden are outgoing, friendly, and remarkably empathetic dogs known for their 'smile' and the distinctive 'spectacles' β dark markings around their eyes that give them a perpetually alert, intelligent expression. They are natural people-pleasers and outstanding therapy dogs.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Keeshonden are outstanding family dogs β one of the best non-sporting breeds for families with children. They are gentle, patient, and genuinely enjoy the company of children. Their moderate size means they are sturdy enough for play but not so large as to accidentally injure small kids. Keeshonden are often called 'Velcro dogs' because they want to be close to their family at all times. They are empathetic and sensitive to their owners' moods, which makes them exceptional comfort and therapy dogs. They get along well with other pets when properly socialized.
- Keeshonden are heavy shedders. Their thick, plush double coat sheds moderately year-round and goes through two massive seasonal blowouts, typically in spring and fall, during which enormous quantities of undercoat come loose. During these periods, daily brushing is essential β you may fill a grocery bag with fur each session. Regular brushing two to three times per week during non-shedding periods helps manage loose hair. Never shave a Keeshond's coat, as it provides essential insulation against both heat and cold and may not grow back properly.
- Keeshond 'spectacles' are the distinctive dark markings around the breed's eyes that create the appearance of eyeglasses. These markings consist of a delicate dark line running from the outer corner of each eye toward the ear, combined with shading and light-colored 'brows' above the eyes. The spectacles give Keeshonden their characteristic alert, intelligent, and somewhat quizzical expression. The markings are a key breed characteristic mentioned in the breed standard and are one of the features that distinguish the Keeshond from other spitz breeds.
