About the Dalmatian
The Dalmatian is one of the most recognizable dog breeds in the world, famous for their unique black or liver spots on a white coat. Originally bred as carriage dogs in Croatia's historical Dalmatia region, they ran alongside horse-drawn carriages and later became firehouse mascots. Dalmatians are athletic, energetic, and dignified dogs with remarkable endurance. Their popularity surged after Disney's '101 Dalmatians,' though this unfortunately led to many impulse purchases by owners unprepared for their high energy and exercise needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Dalmatian puppies are born completely white with no visible spots. The spots begin to develop at about 10 to 14 days old and continue to appear and darken over the first few months of life. New spots may continue developing subtly throughout a Dalmatian's life, though the major spotting pattern is established by about 4 weeks of age. Each Dalmatian's pattern is completely unique β no two Dalmatians have the same spots. The spots can be black or liver (brown), and the ideal spot size is between a dime and a half-dollar coin.
- Deafness is significantly more common in Dalmatians than in most breeds, affecting approximately 15-30% of the breed. This is linked to the same gene responsible for their white coat and blue eyes β the piebald or extreme white gene. Dogs with blue eyes have a higher incidence of deafness. About 8% of Dalmatians are bilaterally deaf (both ears) and 15-22% are unilaterally deaf (one ear). Reputable breeders BAER-test (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response) all puppies before placement and do not breed bilaterally deaf dogs.
- Dalmatians need 60 to 120 minutes of vigorous exercise daily β they are among the most athletic and high-energy breeds. They were bred to run alongside carriages for hours, and this incredible stamina remains. A couple of short walks will not suffice; they need running, hiking, cycling alongside, or other vigorous activities. Without adequate exercise, Dalmatians become destructive, hyperactive, and difficult to manage. They make excellent running and cycling companions. Many behavioral problems attributed to the breed are actually symptoms of insufficient exercise.
