About the Canaan Dog

The Canaan Dog is Israel's national breed and one of the oldest known dog breeds, with archaeological evidence dating back 4,000 years to the ancient Middle East. They are believed to be the dog breed depicted in ancient biblical writings. Canaan Dogs lived as semi-wild pariah dogs in the desert for centuries before being domesticated in the 1930s for military service. They served as sentries, messengers, and mine detectors for the Israeli Defense Forces. Canaan Dogs are alert, vigilant, and naturally suspicious of strangers โ€” traits that made them excellent desert survivors and continue to make them outstanding watchdogs.
