About the Bergamasco Sheepdog
The Bergamasco Sheepdog is an ancient Italian herding breed from the Bergamo Alps, recognized by their extraordinary coat of natural mats or 'flocks' that form into flat, felt-like layers. This unique coat protects them from extreme cold, predator bites, and harsh mountain weather. Unlike the Komondor's round cords, the Bergamasco's coat forms wide, flat mats that create an almost armor-like covering. Beneath this remarkable exterior is an intelligent, patient, and independent herding dog with a strong bond to their family. Bergamascos are calm, watchful, and surprisingly low-maintenance once their coat is properly established.

Frequently Asked Questions
- The Bergamasco coat is made of three hair types: a fine, oily undercoat, long, harsh 'goat hair,' and woolly outer hair. As the dog matures (usually around 1 year), the goat hair and wool begin tangling together to form flat, wide mats called 'flocks.' Owners must manually separate these flocks into strips during formation (a process that takes a few days of focused work) to ensure they form correctly โ thin, flat mats rather than thick, unmanageable clumps. Once properly formed, the flocks are essentially maintenance-free, growing slowly toward the ground over the dog's lifetime.
- Paradoxically, Bergamascos are relatively low-maintenance once their coat flocks are properly established. After the initial flock formation (around age 1-2), the coat requires almost no brushing โ you cannot and should not brush through the flocks. Bathing is infrequent (1-3 times per year) and the flocks take 24+ hours to dry fully. The main effort is during adolescence when the coat is transitioning from puppy fluff to adult flocks โ this period requires careful attention to prevent the coat from matting into one solid mass. Once established, the coat is actually easier to maintain than many long-coated breeds.
- Bergamasco Sheepdogs are excellent with children. They are patient, gentle, and naturally protective of young family members. Their calm, watchful temperament makes them reliable companions for kids of all ages. They seem to instinctively adjust their behavior around children, being gentle and attentive. Their herding background gives them a strong sense of responsibility for their 'flock,' which includes the family's children. They are sturdy enough for active play without being so large as to accidentally injure small children. For families with children, the Bergamasco is one of the more reliably child-friendly herding breeds.
