About the Azawakh
The Azawakh is a West African sighthound from the Sahel region, named after the Azawakh Valley in the Sahara. These strikingly elegant dogs have been companions and guardians of the Tuareg nomads for thousands of years, serving as hunters of gazelle and hare, guardians of the camp, and symbols of status. Azawakhs are extraordinarily lean, with skin stretched tight over visible muscle and bone โ their slender build is an adaptation to extreme desert heat. They are loyal, affectionate with their family, but deeply suspicious of strangers, making them the most guardian-like of all sighthound breeds.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Azawakhs are supposed to be extremely lean โ their visible ribs, hip bones, and muscle definition are normal and healthy for the breed, not signs of malnutrition. Their ultra-lean build is an adaptation to extreme Saharan heat. With minimal body fat and thin skin, they can efficiently dissipate heat. Their body structure allows them to sprint after gazelles at speeds exceeding 40 mph in extreme desert temperatures. Well-meaning strangers or even veterinarians unfamiliar with the breed may incorrectly assume an Azawakh in proper condition is underweight. Breed-specific condition assessment is essential.
- Azawakhs are typically not friendly with strangers. They are the most guardian-oriented sighthound breed, having served as camp protectors for Tuareg nomads. They are naturally suspicious and aloof with unfamiliar people, and some may be actively defensive if they perceive a threat. This is a fundamental breed characteristic, not a training issue. Early, extensive socialization helps prevent excessive wariness from becoming fearfulness or aggression, but Azawakhs will never be the type of dog that greets strangers enthusiastically. They need owners who understand and respect their protective, reserved nature.
- Azawakhs are very rare worldwide and extremely rare in the United States. They were only fully recognized by the AKC in 2019, and annual registrations are minimal. In their West African homeland, they are more common but still valued and relatively scarce. Finding a puppy in the US requires connecting with the small number of dedicated breeders, often with significant waiting lists. Prices typically range from $2,000 to $3,500. Their rarity, combined with their specialized temperament and needs, makes them suitable only for experienced sighthound enthusiasts who understand guardian breed behavior.
