About the Azawakh

The Azawakh is a West African sighthound from the Sahel region, named after the Azawakh Valley in the Sahara. These strikingly elegant dogs have been companions and guardians of the Tuareg nomads for thousands of years, serving as hunters of gazelle and hare, guardians of the camp, and symbols of status. Azawakhs are extraordinarily lean, with skin stretched tight over visible muscle and bone โ€” their slender build is an adaptation to extreme desert heat. They are loyal, affectionate with their family, but deeply suspicious of strangers, making them the most guardian-like of all sighthound breeds.
