About the American Hairless Terrier
The American Hairless Terrier is the only hairless breed native to the United States, originating from a spontaneous hairless mutation in a litter of Rat Terriers in Louisiana in 1972. The breed comes in both hairless and coated varieties, with the hairless version being the most distinctive. They are energetic, intelligent, and playful dogs that retain all the Rat Terrier's wonderful companion qualities without the shedding. Their lack of coat makes them one of the best breeds for allergy sufferers, and their warm, smooth skin is often described as feeling like suede. They are surprisingly sturdy and athletic for a hairless breed.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Yes, hairless American Hairless Terriers absolutely need sunscreen on exposed skin when spending time outdoors. Their bare skin is as vulnerable to UV damage as human skin. Use a pet-safe, fragrance-free sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, applied to all exposed areas before outdoor activities. They also sunburn quickly through car windows. In addition to sunscreen, protective clothing (UV-blocking dog shirts) is recommended for extended outdoor time. Despite the sun sensitivity, many owners find the skin care routine straightforward and a small price for a virtually non-shedding, hypoallergenic companion.
- American Hairless Terriers are among the best breeds for allergy sufferers. The hairless variety produces no loose hair, dramatically reducing airborne allergens. They produce less dander than coated breeds. However, dog allergies are caused by proteins in dander, saliva, and urine β not hair itself β so no dog is truly 100% hypoallergenic. Most people with mild to moderate dog allergies report significant improvement with American Hairless Terriers compared to coated breeds. The coated variety sheds minimally and is also relatively allergy-friendly, though not as much as the hairless version.
- Hairless American Hairless Terriers require regular skin care similar to human skincare. Apply pet-safe sunscreen before outdoor exposure, moisturize dry skin with fragrance-free lotion, and bathe every one to two weeks with a gentle, hypoallergenic shampoo. They can develop acne, blackheads, and rashes β regular gentle cleansing helps prevent these. Protect them from extreme cold with sweaters and coats. Check for skin irritation, scratches, or unusual spots regularly. Despite the skincare routine, many owners find it simpler than managing heavy shedding and coat maintenance in furred breeds.
